Acomodo Razonable

Los estudiantes que reciban servicios de Rehabilitación Vocacional se deben comunicar con el(la) profesor(a) al inicio del semestre para planificar el acomodo razonable y equipo asistivo necesario conforme a las recomendaciones de la Oficina de Asuntos para las Personas con Impedimentos (OAPI), del Decanato de Estudiantes. También aquellos estudiantes con necesidades especiales que requieran de algún tipo de asistencia o acomodo se deberán comunicar con el(la) profesor(a). La Oficina de Asuntos para Personas con Impedimentos se encuentra ubicada en el Decanato de Estudiantes. La misma certificará la necesidad especial y ofrecerá recomendaciones de acomodo razonable.

Las clases en el recinto riopedrense se inician el lunes, 11 de agosto de 2008.

Library Thing introduces Free Web Services API to Common Knowledge

Y continuamos recibiendo buenas noticias y las compartimos.

El 1ro de agosto nos enteramos de que LibraryThing ha introducido nuevos campos de acceso dentro del proyecto Common Knowledge http://www.librarything.com/commonknowledge/.

Common Knowledge es un proyecto de suma importancia para todos, pero especialmente para el curso de la Industria de la Información; en palabras de a centavo, de Adquisiciones, Desarrollo de Colecciones y Referencia. Como Library Thing declara en su descripción, "...es una tecnología que le permite al interesado contribuir hechos interesantes y datos sobre libros, autores, ediciones y otros ítemes dentro del universo de LibraryThing."

Para aquellos que no lo hayan hecho, familiarícense con LibraryThing, el proyecto Common Knowledge, la nueva función, suscríbanse y experimenten.

Introducing the LibraryThing Web Services API.

The API will eventually do many things.

For starters it includes all of the data in LibraryThing's Common Knowledge project, our groundbreaking "fielded wiki" for interesting book information (see original blog post). It includes fields like series, important characters, important places, author dates, author burial places, agents, edits, etc. If you're interested in building or enhancing book-data applications, this should be very interesting.

Common Knowledge is always in progress, but the results so far have been quite impressive. Members have made over 500,000 edits, and certain data types have become exceedingly useful and comprehensive. I'm particularly proud of our Series coverage (eg., Star Wars), better—we think—than any commercial series data.

Oh, and it's free! The data is made available under the highly permissive Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license.

Architecturally, the Web Services API is a straightforward REST XML-based API. The back-end is modular, allowing us to easily expand the available methods in the future. It's request and response styles were modeled closely on Flickr's API—Chris is a big fan—so it should make it easier to find similar sample code. The documentation resembles theirs too.

Kudos to Chris for his work on this and let us know what you think (here).

Update: The other big announcement—another data release—won't be happening today. Too much to do!

Delicious 2.0 llega y se despide de Del.icio.us

Tras más de un año de espera y gestación, ya está disponible Delicious 2.0 , una nueva versión del marcador social que llega con cambios en el dominio, la interfaz y su interior; pero mantiene sus funcionalidades de siempre y promete otras de nuevas que están en camino. Siete palabras lo definen: “faster, easier to learn” (más rápido, más fácil de aprender) y “hopefully more desirable” (esperamos que más deseable).

El primer cambio que veremos al acceder es la nueva interfaz que manteniendo los colores grises y el azul ha sido rediseñada, no solo mejorando el aspecto, sino también la usabilidad y pequeños detalles como la posibilidad de ordenar los marcadores alfabéticamente. Y sin olvidarse de los usuarios actuales, también dice ser más sencilla de entender para aquellos que se incorporen como tales a partir de ahora. Los cambios más significativos podéis verlos en este vídeo.

Otro cambio que a poco uso que le demos enseguida notaremos es la migración por completo al nuevo dominio delicious.com, algo que no elimina el anterior en cuanto enlaces en que usemos del.icio.us, aunque con este camio enmarcado en proporcioanr una marca más clara y evitar las equivocaciones al deletrear el dominio ahora terminaremos siempre accediendo al .COM.

Por último, notaremos una mejora general en la velocidad gracias a una nueva infraestructura. Una velocidad que destaca especialmente si no fijamos en el apartado de las búsquedas, que estrenan un nuevo motor y permiten buscar dentro de todo el marcador social, tus marcadores o los de tu red de contactos.

ALA Endorses the Free Speech Protection Act of 2008

WASHINGTON – The American Library Association (ALA) endorsed Senate bill S. 2977, the “Free Speech Protection Act of 2008” and urged its passage as soon as possible in order to protect authors, publishers and others in the United States from libel lawsuits filed in foreign countries. The bill was introduced following several notable defamation lawsuits filed in Great Britain and elsewhere against authors and publishers in the United States.

Lynne Bradley, Director of ALA’s Office of Government Relations said that “ALA is concerned that foreign libel lawsuits threaten U.S. authors and publishers and our freedoms of speech and the press. Through its chilling effect, such ‘venue shopping’ also denies the American people the right to read and to access information – another inherent First Amendment right essential to our democratic form of government.”

This “shopping around” for foreign court venues has been termed “libel tourism” following cases such as that of Rachel Ehrenfeld. At a recent ALA Annual Conference, Ehrenfeld described her experiences being sued in Great Britain by a wealthy Saudi Arabian. A U.S. Department of Defense employee and terrorism expert, Ehrenfeld published her book Financing Evil, in the United States. Though only 23 copies of the book were sold in the United Kingdom, the British court ruled that all copies must be destroyed and ordered Ehrenfeld to pay thousands of dollars in damages. Great Britain has been seen as a likely venue for libel tourism because of its notoriously lower standards for libel.

“Libel tourism should be called ‘libel terrorism’,” added Mrs. Bradley. “Such legal maneuvers are an attempt to thwart the First Amendment rights of Americans when critics don’t like what our authors have to say – or the rights we have under our First Amendment.”

ALA expressed its appreciation to Senators Arlen Specter (PA.-R) and Joseph Lieberman (CT.-I), who introduced S. 2977, and cosponsor Senator Charles Schumer, (NY-D). The Association will be encouraging its over 66,000 members and other First Amendment supporters to lobby senators during the summer recess to pass this bill in September. It will also push for similar legislation in the House of Representatives so that a bill could be passed and signed by the President this year.

Librarians share good practice in marketing

Esta es una nueva publicación generada por SCONUL, anunciada a principios de julio 2008. La misma destaca la importancia que tienen las competencias de mercadeo del bibliotecario para el futuro de las bibliotecas académicas.

Al reseñar el documento, SCONUL indica:

The publication brings together leading voices in the sector to emphasise the importance of promoting library services to students, researchers, academics and other stakeholders. The study shows that libraries often 'hide their light under a bushel' by offering resources as on-line services which are not easily identified as coming from the library. Students and researchers still tend to view the library as the building itself. Valuable though that is, today's academic libraries reach out far beyond their own walls.

The paper also details how the need for customer-focused marketing has never been greater, with new services, competitors and users, competing for librarians' time and providing libraries with fresh challenges.

Toby Bainton, Secretary of SCONUL said, "Good marketing helps libraries ensure their customers know the full range of services they have on offer, and that those services are being used to their full potential. Libraries should not hide their light under a bushel. A real challenge for us, is that many of our on-line services are not recognised as part of the library. A key theme of this publication is libraries being market-led, not marketing-led, so we always have our customer in mind."

An outstanding example of recent successful marketing campaigns from academic libraries is the 'Sshh...!' bags from Leeds University library, a biodegradable bag in various colours that proved so popular with students they set up a Facebook group and website that displays the library bags next to famous sites all over the world, including the Taj Mahal and White House.
The increased use of the internet for academic research has meant that the library does not have the captive audience they once had for their services. As one author of the publication commented, "In many ways Google is our main competitor".
