Library Assessment Conference Proceedings Now Available

Washington DC--The proceedings of the 2008 Library Assessment Conference, "Building Effective, Sustainable, Practical Assessment," held August 4-7 in Seattle, Washington, are now available freely on the Web and for purchase in print or on CD-ROM.

This second Library Assessment Conference--following the successful 2006 conference in Charlottesville, Virginia--brought together over 375 participants from libraries, information schools, associations, library systems, and vendors for four days of assessment presentations, poster sessions, discussions, and workshops. The proceedings contain more than 60 papers spanning assessment activities in libraries, information literacy, library as place, organizational culture, management information, using assessment data for change, assessment methods, reference evaluation, LibQUAL+®, statistical data, program impact/evaluation, usability, e-metrics, and more.

Among other conference highlights were:

  • An opening keynote session featuring three university librarians who are known for their forward-looking and challenging perspectives: Betsy Wilson (University of Washington), Rick Luce (Emory University), and Susan Gibbons (University of Rochester)

  • A plenary session on evaluating quality with Paul Gregutt, noted Northwest wine author and columnist

  • Career recognition awards to three pioneers in library assessment--Amos Lakos, Shelley Phipps, and Duane Webster--presented at the conference reception in the stunning Olympic Sculpture Park against the backdrop of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains

The conference co-chairs--Steve Hiller (University of Washington), Martha Kyrillidou (Association of Research Libraries), and Jim Self (University of Virginia)--would like to thank the conference committee members and all of the participants for their efforts in furthering effective, sustainable, and practical library assessment.
